The Dauber Stopper™ To The Rescue!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Taking a few minutes to walk the perimeter of your home could have a huge pay off for you. Household pests such as spiders, wasps, mice, snakes, and ants can exploit even the smallest of openings to find their way inside.

Recently, while inspecting a home here in Houston, we discovered an unprotected water heater and washing machine drain line. In this particular home, the water heater is in the attic, and the laundry room is on the second floor. In both cases, both the water heater and the washing machine sit in a shallow drain pan. This is by design and provides a place to catch and drain any water leaks. These pans drain outside as shown above. So not only can pests access the open end of the drain lines, in this case, there is a larger area in the wall large enough for mice. It looks like this drain line flange lost to a weed eater and has broken away. Our product, The Dauber Stopper™, is a perfect solution for protecting these drain lines and keeping pests out, while still allowing proper drain flow. Well now that Spring has sprung, insects will be reemerging and making themselves at home in our yards and homes. With the spring and summer rains, areas around your home will collect water and can lead to mosquitos. Female mosquitos lay their eggs in stagnant water. In addition to being a pest and biting, they can carry diseases. Therefore, make sure you routinely empty or remove items that can collect rainwater which eliminates places for them to breed. Do a walk around your home and remove any items such as empty flower pots, buckets or other items that can trap and collect rainwater. If you have a birdbath, make sure to change the water frequently. You can use it to water other plants in the yard to avoid wasting water.

Talk with your pest control representative about mosquito treatment options. There are products that reduce the ability for mosquitos to breed and can ensure you of a great outdoor mosquito-free season.

Water Damage in the Home

Any homeowner who has suffered catastrophic water damage will tell you it’s not fun. In fact, presenting a solution to an overlooked vulnerability that can cause water damage would make your company look like a superstar.

The Unseen Problem

Every house with a central HVAC system has a “dripping time bomb,” lurking inside of it. If left unchecked, this can take out the ceiling and trash the room below. The result is costly insurance claims and thousands of dollars of repairs.

With the average AC unit producing gallons of condensation daily. Therefore, this excess water needs to be able to drain away. Current code (Section 307.2.3) in the International Mechanical Code Book states that an emergency drain line must exit the home to provide a way for the water to exit the home when the primary drain line becomes blocked.  The primary gets blocked as algae, calcium, and other particulates accumulate in these lines. So to prevent water damage inside, an emergency drain line leads outside. Unfortunately, because the emergency drain line is exposed, it is an entry point into the home for pests.

Ask any HVAC technician, and they will tell you that Mud Dauber Wasps, routinely build their nests inside these lines. This leads to a cork effect in the line which isn’t discovered until water has found its way inside the home.

The Solution is Here

Is Your Home Ready for Spring?

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

It’s about time. While winter has dragged on for most of the country, spring will soon arrive and with that warmer temperatures as well. As families begin spending more time outdoors doing yard work, grilling, and enjoying family time – insects will reemerge as well. Most homeowners will rely on their local pest control company to protect their home. Others for spraying and treating themselves; however, the products available to you and are not as strong and tend to be less effective.

If you have a good pest control company, they will do more than just spray chemicals—they will do exclusion work. Exclusion work, simply put, is locating exposed entry points on the home and protecting sealing or guarding them. Some examples of exclusion techniques might be protecting your ridge vent along your roof from bats and birds, or the dryer vent from roaches and spiders. In fact, the average home has a cumulative exposure to the outside of about 2 square feet. Imagine a 17”x17” hole in your living room wall!

Modern AC Products’ new device, The Dauber Stopper™, is an exclusion item designed to protect the exposed AC drain lines on the home. These ¾” PVC lines that emerge out of the house, generally along the soffit, are a vulnerable entry point for insects. Of greater danger is mud dauber wasps building their nests inside these lines preventing water from draining through these lines as designed. A blocked emergency drain line will lead to catastrophic water damage to homeowners. To learn more on why every home in America should have The Dauber Stopper™ please visit thedauberstopper.com.
